MistraPharma is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra) and is governed by a programme board comprised of representatives of the main end users.
The use of pharmaceuticals is of vital importance for human health, but at the same time active pharmaceutical ingredients are increasingly recognized as potential environmental pollutants. MistraPharma aims at identifying human pharmaceuticals currently in use that are likely to be of concern to species in aquatic ecosystems. This will be achieved by utilizing existing knowledge in combination with data on exposures and effects generated within the program. MistraPharma will also produce knowledge that can form the basis of new recommendations for risk management strategies. These strategies will include new and improved methodologies for the pre-market identification of future pharmaceuticals of environmental concern and improved wastewater treatment technologies. The MistraPharma research is organized into four main Work Packages (WPs) which focuses on various issues related to pharmaceuticals in the environment. In addition the communication project will ensure an efficient communication with the end-users.
